BLACK MARCH
Thursday, March 1st 2012 to Saturday 31st March 2012With the continuing campaigns for Internet-censoring litigation such as SOPA and PIPA, and the closure of sites such as Megaupload under allegations of ‘piracy’ and ‘conspiracy’ the time has come to take a stand against music, film and media companies’ lobbyists.
The only way is to hit them where it truly hurts.
Their profit margins.March 2012 is the end of the 1st quarter in economic reports worldwide.
Do not buy a single record. Do not download a single song, legally or illegally. Do not go to see a single film in cinemas, or download a copy, Do not buy a DVD in the stores. Do not buy a videogame. Do not buy a single book or magazine.
Wait the 4 weeks to buy them in April: see the film later, etc. Holding out for just 4 weeks, maximum, will leave a gaping hole in media and entertainment companies’ profits for the 1st quarter, an economic hit which will in turn be observed by governments worldwide as stocks and shares will blip from a large enough loss of incomes.
This action can give a statement of intent:”We will not tolerate the Media Industries’ lobbying for legistation which will censor the internet.”
I’m not an educated or political person. My friends know this about me. I don’t have strong opinions about this sort of thing.
I feel that this is a much better way to protest than blacking out your tumblr for a day.
I am in favour of this.
I can do this. Sounds much better than blacking out my blog that no one goes to.
This will probably have a stronger impact than anything else I can do.
Or, rather, not do.
I really wish there was another way to do this, guys. I really do. Because I support taking action against SOPA and PIPA but…
By purposefully bombing the entertainment industry you are really hurting the little guy. People, tons of people are going to lose their jobs. And it is not the big CEOs and them, it is the little guys. The costume designers, the sound mixers, the graphic designers, the makeup artists, the camera persons, the digital animators, etc etc etc all those little people. This would leave a huge black mark on their resumes. How would you feel if you poured all of your heart and soul and 15-18 hour workdays into something, only for it to absolutely crash and burn. And depending on how bad it bombs, determines if you ever get a job again. For one month, you get no income. Your rent, your food, your electricity, your water is gone because of this. And yes, we can blame it on the heads of the company. We can blame the government. But I know the industry that I am going into and as usual, the little guy holds the burden.
I am very torn about this because I KNOW it would work. It would show them we mean business and we are very adement about our freedom to choose or NOT to choose.
But in terms of all the thousands of people that work for these entertainment companies….. I am nervous.
Because I plan on being one of them.
